Introduction This position is suited to a mature and experienced accountant who can take full responsibility for the accounting function of the business. The person must be capable of preparing complete financial records, balancing all accounts, submitting statutory returns, and ensuring that the company’s financial affairs are accurate, compliant and properly managed. Duties & Responsibilities 1. Full Accounting Function The Senior Accountant will be responsible for the complete accounting process, including: Maintaining accurate financial records Processing and reviewing accounting entries Ensuring all transactions are correctly allocated Reconciling general ledger accounts Reviewing debtors, creditors, cashbook and stock-related accounts Ensuring all accounts are balanced and accurate Preparing monthly management accounts Preparing year-end accounts for review or audit Completing annual financial statements where required 2. Statutory Returns and Compliance The Senior Accountant must ensure that all statutory returns are completed accurately and submitted on time. This includes: VAT returns PAYE submissions UIF submissions Workmen’s Compensation returns EMP201 and EMP501 submissions IRP5 reconciliations SARS correspondence and queries CIPC-related submissions where applicable Any other statutory or regulatory returns required by the company The candidate must be comfortable dealing with SARS and other authorities and must ensure the company remains compliant at all times. 3. Balance Sheet and Control Account Reconciliations The Senior Accountant must ensure that all balance sheet accounts are properly reconciled and balanced. This includes: Bank reconciliations VAT control accounts PAYE/UIF control accounts Debtors control Creditors control Loan accounts Fixed asset registers Stock control accounts Accruals and provisions Any other balance sheet reconciliations required by management 4. Financial Reporting The successful candidate will be required to prepare clear and accurate financial reports for management. This may include: Monthly income statements Balance sheets Cash flow reports Profit and loss reports Debtors and creditors reports Expense analysis Budget comparisons Financial performance summaries Reports requested by management from time to time 5. Internal Controls and Accuracy The Senior Accountant must assist in maintaining proper internal financial controls within the business. Responsibilities include: Ensuring accounting procedures are followed correctly Identifying errors, weaknesses or risks in the accounting system Recommending improvements to financial processes Ensuring supporting documents are properly filed and available Ensuring financial information is accurate and reliable Maintaining confidentiality of company financial information 6. Payroll and Related Accounting Where required, the Senior Accountant may be involved in payroll-related accounting and compliance. This includes: Reconciling payroll to accounting records Ensuring PAYE, UIF and SDL are correctly calculated and submitted Assisting with EMP201 and EMP501 reconciliations Ensuring payroll-related liabilities are correctly recorded Liaising with payroll administrators where applicable Desired Experience & Qualification A minimum accounting degree or relevant accounting qualification At least 5 years’ experience in an accounting or senior bookkeeping role Strong working knowledge of accounting principles and financial controls Experience in preparing financial statements Experience with SARS submissions and statutory returns Good knowledge of VAT, PAYE, UIF, Workmen’s Compensation and related compliance matters Strong computer literacy and experience with accounting software Good Excel skills Excellent attention to detail Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines Honest, reliable, organised and professional work ethic Package & Remuneration Market related
