General DescriptionAsphalt Laborers typically have previous experience working with hot mix asphalt or in road construction; predominately working with their hands, feet and using consistent thought process in decision making and executing instructions. Key DutiesAsphalt Laborers are responsible for carrying out a wide range of physical responsibilities which may include: Walking alongside Asphalt Paver operations, identifying asphalt surface areas, that require attention.Utilizing hand tools, such as Asphalt Lute and Shovel, to manipulate asphalt to ensure smooth asphalt surface.Serving at the Spotter for dump trucks and other heavy equipment; which consists of visual, verbal and hand communication(s).Operating small equipment, such as broom tractor, skid steer, roller, chop saw, grinders, walk behind saw, etc.Shoveling, sweeping, and using a wheelbarrowOther duties, as assigned.Qualification RequirementsGeneralTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each Key Duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and ExperienceThis position is an entry-level role and requires minimal experience in the asphalt industry. High school diploma or equivalentDriver's license (preferred)Must be able to understand verbal and visual instructions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.Physical DemandsConstant ability to walk at slow pace, on various walking surfaces, including asphalt, concrete, dirt and stone.Frequent ability to stoop, bend, and crouch.Frequent physical dexterity to use hand tools, such as a hand shovel and asphalt lute; consisting of pushing/pulling and lifting up to 25 lbs.Must be able to use steps and handle/grab bard to access and egress heavy mobile equipment.Frequent vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.Frequent ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., moving equipment, backing alarms, or other alarms, instructions/directions from supervisor and/or spotter).Work EnvironmentWork is performed outdoors, in various weather conditions; typically excluding below freezing temperatures.Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, commonly found in road construction.Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found in road construction or near equipment, such as, grease, diesel fuel, gasoline, and asphalt.Employee regularly works near heavy equipment, moving machinery, and near traffic.Demonstrates Safety 1 stAssess work environment for possible hazards and makes sure training is adequate to the task.Has proper personal protective equipment and tools, uses them appropriately for the given task.Speaks up if seeing an unsafe actIdentifies and turns in near miss reportsAsks for help, when needed, to perform tasks safely.Considers if there is a safer way to perform work and communicates.Northeast Paving is a full-service paving and construction company operating throughout the northeastern United States.
